In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the GR Corolla are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The GTI doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Toyota GR Corolla has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The GTI doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The GR Corolla has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The GTI doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

Both the GR Corolla and the GTI have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the GR Corolla 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volkswagen covers the GTI. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the GTI ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The GR Corolla’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the GTI’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are almost 2 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Volkswagen dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GR Corolla’s warranty.

The battery on the GR Corolla is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the GR Corolla’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The GTI’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the GR Corolla’s reliability 12 points higher than the GTI.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are better in initial quality than Volkswagen vehicles. With 25 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Toyota higher than Volkswagen.

Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 123 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volkswagen is ranked 35th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota third in overall reliability. Volkswagen is ranked 18th.

The GR Corolla’s 1.6 turbo 3-cylinder produces 59 more horsepower (300 vs. 241) and 22 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 273) than the GTI’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

The GR Corolla has a tether attaching its gas cap to prevent its loss. The GTI’s gas cap isn’t tethered, so it can be left at a gas station if the driver forgets to screw the cap back in.

An eight-speed automatic is optional on the Toyota GR Corolla, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the GTI.

For better traction, the GR Corolla has larger tires than the GTI (235/40R18 vs. 225/40R18).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GR Corolla is 2.2 inches wider in the front and 3 inches wider in the rear than on the GTI.

The GR Corolla’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (58.4% to 41.6%) than the GTI’s (60.9% to 39.1%). This gives the GR Corolla more stable handling and braking.

The GR Corolla handles at 1.02 G’s, while the GTI pulls only .97 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The GR Corolla executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the GTI Autobahn (24.9 seconds @ .74 average G’s vs. 25.5 seconds @ .72 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the GR Corolla’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the GTI’s (36.1 feet vs. 38.1 feet).

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the GR Corolla is quieter than the GTI Autobahn (80 vs. 82 dB).

The GR Corolla has .8 inches more front legroom, .5 inches more front hip room and .6 inches more rear shoulder room than the GTI.

The GR Corolla has a larger trunk with its rear seat folded than the GTI with its rear seat folded (35 vs. 34.5 cubic feet).

The GR Corolla Auto offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GTI doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

If the windows are left open on the GR Corolla the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the GTI can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The GR Corolla’s standard Smart Key System allows you to unlock the doors from either front door handle, open the trunk, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Push-button Start standard on the GTI only offers hands-free access for the ignition, none to unlock the car.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the GR Corolla has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the GTI only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The GR Corolla has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning is only available on the GTI Autobahn.

The GR Corolla was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2023. The GTI hasn’t been picked since 2022.
