In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the GR Corolla are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Golf R doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Toyota GR Corolla has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Golf R doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the GR Corolla and the Golf R have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the GR Corolla 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volkswagen covers the Golf R. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Golf R ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The GR Corolla’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Golf R’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are almost 2 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Volkswagen dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GR Corolla’s warranty.

The battery on the GR Corolla is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the GR Corolla’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The Golf R’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the GR Corolla’s reliability 20 points higher than the Golf R.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are better in initial quality than Volkswagen vehicles. With 25 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Toyota higher than Volkswagen.

Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 123 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volkswagen is ranked 35th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota third in overall reliability. Volkswagen is ranked 18th.

An eight-speed automatic is optional on the Toyota GR Corolla, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the Golf R.

The GR Corolla stops much shorter than the Golf R:

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GR Corolla is 1.9 inches wider in the front and 2.9 inches wider in the rear than on the Golf R.

The GR Corolla handles at 1.02 G’s, while the Golf R pulls only .95 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the GR Corolla’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the Golf R’s (36.1 feet vs. 38.1 feet).

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the GR Corolla is quieter than the Golf R (70 vs. 72 dB).

The GR Corolla has .8 inches more front legroom, .5 inches more front hip room and .6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Golf R.

The GR Corolla has a larger trunk with its rear seat folded than the Golf R with its rear seat folded (35 vs. 34.5 cubic feet).

If the windows are left open on the GR Corolla the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the Golf R can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the GR Corolla has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Golf R only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The GR Corolla was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2023. The Golf R hasn’t been picked since 2021.

The Toyota Corolla outsold the Volkswagen Golf R by over 55 to one during 2024.
