With its standard Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, the Toyota Rav4 is better at preventing collisions with pedestrians than the Genesis GV70, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Toyota Rav4 achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Genesis GV70 has not been tested.

The Rav4 has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GV70 doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Rav4 and the GV70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Toyota Rav4 is safer than the Genesis GV70:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Toyota Rav4 is safer than the Genesis GV70:

Warranty

There are almost 6 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Rav4’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Rav4’s reliability 51 points higher than the GV70.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 51 more problems per 100 vehicles, Genesis is ranked 22nd.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota third in overall reliability. Genesis is ranked 14th.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Rav4 gets better mileage than the GV70:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Rav4 uses regular unleaded gasoline. The GV70 with the 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder engine requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota Rav4 higher (5 to 6 out of 10) than the Genesis GV70 (4). This means the Rav4 produces up to 12.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the GV70 every 15,000 miles.

Suspension and Handling

The Rav4 4WD handles at .84 G’s, while the GV70 Advanced pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Rav4 LE/XLE’s turning circle is 1.6 feet tighter than the GV70’s (36.1 feet vs. 37.7 feet). The Rav4 XLE Premium/Limited’s turning circle is .3 feet tighter than the GV70’s (37.4 feet vs. 37.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Rav4 LE/XLE has a 1.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the GV70 (8.4 vs. 7.3 inches), allowing the Rav4 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Rav4 XLE Premium/Limited’s minimum ground clearance is 1.3 inches higher than on the GV70 (8.6 vs. 7.3 inches).

Chassis

The Toyota Rav4 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 900 to 950 pounds less than the Genesis GV70.

The Rav4 is 4.7 inches shorter than the GV70, making the Rav4 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Rav4 Limited uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The GV70 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the Rav4 Limited 4WD is quieter than the GV70 Sport Prestige (66 vs. 67 dB).

Passenger Space

The Rav4 has .4 inches more rear headroom and .6 inches more rear legroom than the GV70.

Cargo Capacity

The Rav4 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the GV70 with its rear seat up (37.6 vs. 28.9 cubic feet). The Rav4 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the GV70 with its rear seat folded (69.8 vs. 56.9 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Rav4 easier. The Rav4’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 27.8 inches, while the GV70’s liftover is 29.9 inches.

Towing

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Rav4 uses the Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The GV70 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

The Rav4 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GV70 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

If the windows are left open on the Rav4 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the GV70 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Model Availability

The Rav4 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The GV70 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Economic Advantages

According to iSeeCars.com the 2025 Toyota Rav4 retains 69.74% of its original value after 5 years, significantly more than the 48.25% resale value of the 2025 Genesis GV70 after five years, which can save the Toyota’s owner up to $15977.657444 in depreciation.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Toyota Rav4, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Genesis GV70 isn't recommended.

The Toyota Rav4 outsold the Genesis GV70 by over 16 to one during 2024.
